Summer is an ideal time to prepare your child’s vision for the upcoming school year. While new supplies and updated schedules may be top of mind, clear distance vision is also essential for classroom success. For children with myopia, a new glasses prescription may improve vision but may not address continued progression. Myopia management focuses on slowing changes in nearsightedness while supporting clear, comfortable vision as a child grows.
Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, causes distant objects to appear blurry. It often develops or progresses during the school years while the eyes are still growing. Children may struggle to see the board, recognize faces across a room, or participate comfortably in sports and other distance-based activities.
A stronger prescription from one year to the next may indicate that myopia is progressing. Starting management early may help reduce how quickly a child’s prescription changes and lower the likelihood of developing high myopia.
Beginning myopia management during the summer gives children time to adjust before returning to the classroom. Parents can also establish consistent treatment routines without balancing homework, school activities, and early morning schedules.
A summer eye exam allows us to:
• Check whether a child’s prescription has changed
• Evaluate eye health and visual development
• Review family history and other myopia risk factors
• Recommend a personalized treatment and follow-up plan
Starting early also provides time for contact lens training, frame fittings, prescription adjustments, and follow-up appointments.
Every child has different visual needs, comfort levels, and daily routines. After a comprehensive eye exam, we may discuss one or more myopia management options.
Ortho-K uses specially designed rigid contact lenses worn while sleeping. The lenses gently reshape the front surface of the eye, allowing many children to see clearly during the day without glasses or daytime contacts.
MiSight 1 day contact lenses are daily disposable soft lenses designed to correct distance vision while slowing myopia progression. MiSight is FDA-approved for eligible children who begin treatment between ages 8 and 12.
Low-dose atropine drops are prescription eye drops typically used once daily. They may help slow changes in myopia and can be considered for children who are not ready for contact lenses or who may benefit from an additional treatment approach. Low-dose atropine is used off-label for myopia management in the United States.
Stellest lenses are specialized eyeglass lenses that correct blurry distance vision while using surrounding lenslets to help slow eye growth. The FDA authorized Stellest lenses for eligible children beginning treatment between ages 6 and 12.
Myopia management requires regular monitoring because a child’s eyes and prescription can change over time. Follow-up visits help us evaluate treatment progress, confirm that lenses fit properly, and make adjustments when needed.
